Philly Law Firm Turns 50

John F. Kennedy narrowly beat Richard Nixon to become President of the United States, Pittsburgh prevailed over the New York Yanks in the World Series and the most requested song of 1960 was The Twist  by Philadelphia’s own Chubby Checker.

Elvis was shakin’ to It’s Now or Never as it rode to the top of the charts that year – in the United States and the UK – ultimately selling more than 25 million copies.  And right here in Philadelphia a couple of young lawyers launched the law firm known today as Zarwin Baum DeVito Kaplan Schaer Toddy, PC.

Philly’s Mike O’Brien Picks Up Major Endorsements

Endorsements for incumbent Pennsylvania State Representative Mike O’Brien are making for nice reading and show –  from this diverse group of support – that he is not a single issue candidate.  We’re talking about Philly For Change, Philadelphia Council of AFL-CIO, Liberty City Gay and Lesbian Philadelphia Democratic Club, Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania PAC, The Federation of Teachers, and the Philly chapter of NOW….just to name a few.

In his first two terms, Mike has been a prolific author of legislation, sponsoring 11 bills of legislation. He has worked with other members of the House to co-sponsor more than 410 bills important to the health, welfare and quality of life issues for all Philadelphians.

Philadelphia City Council to Ponder Taxing Smokes

Philadelphia’s Darrell Clarke, BUZZ’s City Councilman introduced a bill that would tax your chewin’ habit instead of your trash – as proposed in Mayor Nutter‘s budget.

We’re not talking about smokes – except for cigars and paper if you roll your own – and chewin’ tobacca.

Not a bad idea – but why not add marijuana to that list?   Seems silly that booming industry gets away tax free!  And do we have a great PR maven to help get this ball rolling.

Marathon scene in De Niro movie

Cary Borish, an owner of the popular Philadelphia eatery Marathon Grill says it was fun and exciting to play host to the film crew and stars of The Dark Fields being shot in town this month.  Amazing, he said,  to see how many people it took on the set to get one scene shot.  “Almost as many as it takes to get a hot bowl of our homemade matzah ball soup to our customers!”

BUZZ sat in the same booth at the Marathon at 1818 Market Street (two days later) that Hollywood star and homeboy Bradley Cooper sat in which overlooks the veranda of the restaurant – but, alas, only he made the cut in the flick that also stars Bobby De Niro.

All of this is terrific PR for Philly and so fun to see so many gainfully employed.

People should know

PR maven Harriet Lessy thinks waitstaff ought to be required to know what’s on their menus. Case in point: She recently dined out with friends whose granddaughter is dangerously allergic to nuts – especially peanuts.

“We were assured that there was nothing in the dish she ordered that was cooked with the offending legumes,” says Harriet. But when the fish entree was delivered, “it had crushed peanuts as a garnish.”
